The Daihatsu Hijet – 993cc Shadowboat Extraordinaire
Ha ha ha, we bought A Daihatsu HiJet without even asking if it was in good condition!!! Whee!!! We trust James and David didn’t give us a lemon as they were Ralliers too. They don’t get to go though; that’s how we got the car. We are very sad for them but we know that they’ll be ready when they’re ready.
The Daihatsu HiJet Before

After last year’s rally, all of the vehicles that made it to Mongolia were auctioned off for charity to support a local Children’s Home. I haven’t caught wind of the charity the vehicles will be donated to this year, but I trust its another good one and I will keep you all posted.
- Saw lots of these in Taiwan, very cool car/van.
- Pretty large, good for hauling all our kit or the occasional hitcher.
- Looked pretty rugged to me.
- Looks like a “shadow boat” and that tickles me.
The Daihatsu HiJet AFTER
Oh, man . . . Here’s a video of a 1988 HiJet from MTV’s PIMP MY RIDE. Oh, man, that scares me. Well, at least our HiJet is a 1997. That’s a full 9 years of improvement. Heck, today Daihatsu’s making Hybrid HiJets. Too bad we can drive them in America . . . Although, here’s a site run out of Oregon where you can buy HiJets and HiJet parts (for offroad use only).
